Together we grow! Together we flourish! Together we fly!
At Tolleshunt D’Arcy St Nicholas CofE Primary Academy, spirituality sits at the heart of our vision to help every child soar. Inspired by Isaiah 40:31 - “They will soar on wings like eagles” - we encourage hope, courage, curiosity and strength across our whole community.
Spirituality is an essential part of educating the whole child. It helps pupils understand themselves, form meaningful relationships, appreciate beauty and wonder in the world, and explore big questions about purpose and identity. This is not about teaching a specific faith; spirituality belongs to everyone.
We help children explore spirituality through four key areas which guide our conversations and reflections:
Ourselves – recognising feelings, strengths and our sense of identity
Others – developing empathy, kindness and respect
The wider natural world – noticing beauty, creativity and awe
Beyond – exploring mystery, meaning and experiences that go beyond everyday life
To support this, we use the language of WOWs, OWs, NOWs and POWs.
WOWs, OWs, NOWs and POWs
WOWs - are moments of awe and amazement - hearing a beautiful piece of music, seeing something in nature, or experiencing joy and achievement.
OWs - happen when life feels challenging or disappointing. These moments help pupils develop empathy, resilience and emotional understanding.
NOWs - are still, reflective moments when children pause, notice how they feel and appreciate the present.
POWs - Powerful Opportunities to Change the World - help pupils recognise that they can make a real difference. These connect directly to: courageous advocacy, social justice, responsibility and stewardship.
Spirituality is woven throughout our daily life and reflects our core values of Perseverance, Friendship and Respect. Children encounter spiritual growth through lessons, relationships, nature, quiet reflection, challenging moments and shared celebrations.
Our curriculum provides rich opportunities for deep thinking and emotional development. Pupils encounter wonder in music, art, stories and nature, explore big questions, and learn about different cultures and worldviews. Forest School, educational visits, performances and creative learning help children express themselves and discover who they are becoming.
Religious Education offers pupils a safe space to explore belief, meaning and purpose. They learn about a variety of faiths and worldviews, ask questions and reflect on how beliefs shape people’s lives. We use WOWs, OWs, NOWs and POWs where appropriate to help children connect their learning to their own experiences and understanding.
Collective Worship is invitational, inclusive and inspirational. It encourages pupils to reflect, feel part of a community and consider what it means to live well with others. Worship creates space for joyful celebration, stillness and silence, as well as support in times of challenge. These moments naturally link to WOW reflections, OW experiences, NOW pauses and POW opportunities to act for good.
Every adult at Tolleshunt D’Arcy contributes to nurturing the spiritual wellbeing of our pupils. We aim to create a school culture where:
Everyone is valued and respected
Differences are welcomed
Kindness is modelled
Achievements are celebrated
Children feel confident to share thoughts and feelings
Pupils recognise their ability to make the world a better place
Spirituality is a shared journey, helping every member of our community grow, flourish and take flight.
