Our primary school follows the Twinkl Phonics programme to aid teachers in being able to deliver high-quality, systematic phonics teaching from the Early Years Foundation Stage through Key Stage 1. The scheme provides a structured, step-by-step approach that supports children in learning the sounds (phonemes) and spellings (graphemes) needed to become confident readers and writers.
Twinkl Phonics is organised into six levels, allowing staff to match teaching closely to children’s developmental stages. Each lesson includes engaging games, songs, stories, and interactive activities that help children practise new sounds, blend them for reading, and segment them for spelling. Teachers use the programme’s planning and resources to ensure lessons follow a consistent structure and include opportunities for whole-class teaching, group work, and independent practice.
The scheme also offers assessment tools that enable staff to track progress regularly and identify children who may need extra support. Additional intervention materials are used to help these pupils consolidate key skills.
A wide range of decodable reading books are integrated into the scheme, giving children purposeful opportunities to apply what they have learned in class. Parents are supported with guidance and resources so they can reinforce phonics learning at home.
Combined with high quality teaching, the Twinkl Phonics scheme helps the school maintain a cohesive, engaging, and evidence-based approach to early reading, ensuring that all children build strong foundations for future literacy success.
